The effect runs in two passes: the photo is smoothed until noise and fine texture disappear, then colours are collapsed into a handful of tones and the surviving edges get an outline. What comes out looks like editorial flat graphics — broad fills, a calm palette, readable silhouettes. It suits an article header, a product card or a presentation placeholder when the original photograph is simply too busy. Your browser does the maths and the file is never sent anywhere. No, the button produces a PNG. The effect imitates the look of flat vector artwork, but the file stays a raster: pixels inside, not curves, and the edges will step if you blow it up. If you specifically need paths you can open in Illustrator or Figma, use a raster-to-vector tracer instead.
Push shape simplification toward 40 to 60 px and drop the tone count to 4 at the same time. Smoothing then eats every texture and the palette collapses into a few broad fills. Raise the outline to 50 to 70 % in that mode, otherwise neighbouring patches of similar colour merge and the silhouette stops reading.
Simplification is probably too high for this resolution: eyes and lips cover less area than the smoothing radius and dissolve into the skin. Bring the slider down to 8 to 14 px, raise tones to 12 to 16, and add a little contrast — the shadows around the eyes restore volume while the flat look survives.
It sets the long edge of the finished image, from 520 to 1800 pixels. The picture is resampled to that size before processing, so the setting changes the look as well as the file weight: at 520 px a 20 px smoothing radius covers a much larger share of the frame than it does at 1800 px, and the result is coarser.
Not well. Smoothing blurs thin strokes and palette reduction finishes off the antialiasing of letterforms, so small text becomes unreadable. The effect targets photographs with large shapes. A UI screenshot is better left alone or handled by tools that do not touch its geometry.
The frame is resampled to the chosen output size first, at most 1800 px on the long edge, so even a DSLR file takes seconds rather than minutes. Smoothing is the heavy part: at the maximum 60 px on a modest laptop the tab can lag for a second or two after each slider move.
No. The whole effect is ordinary JavaScript running in your browser, and the image lives in tab memory and a canvas element. Neither the source nor the result leaves the machine, so personal photos can be stylised without worrying about where a copy ends up.
