Nothing kills watch time faster than audio that is too quiet or clipped to pieces — a viewer on a commute just swipes past. No. It computes peak and RMS from the decoded samples — a fast preflight, not a certified LUFS meter with K-weighting and gating per ITU-R BS.1770. That is enough to answer "is it too quiet or clipping?", but if you are delivering to TV or a platform with a contractual LUFS target, measure in a professional editor.
Platforms normalise audio and turn loud tracks down, so pushing for maximum level gains nothing. A practical target is a peak no higher than roughly -1 dBFS with speech averaging around -18 dBFS RMS. After platform processing the clip then sounds neither thin nor distorted.
The tool relies on the browser's own decoders. If the track uses a codec the browser cannot parse, decoding never happens and no report is produced. Work around it by exporting the audio as WAV or MP3 in any editor and loading that, or by opening the same file in a different browser.
There is no hard cap, but decoding expands the entire track into tab memory. An hour-long file can freeze a modest laptop or a phone. For long recordings, check a representative couple of minutes instead — the level reads just as clearly.
That a meaningful part of the clip sits below the audible threshold. Sometimes that is fine — pauses, empty intros and outros. More often it is a symptom: a mic that never connected, an audio track offset from the video, or an export with a muted channel. Check the head and tail of the timeline.
No. The file is opened from local disk, decoded by the Web Audio engine inside your tab, and not a byte leaves the machine. That makes it safe for unreleased footage and NDA client rough cuts.
