A clip shot for YouTube shows up as a thin strip inside a black rectangle when you post it to a vertical feed. Load the video, pick a frame under «Format» — 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, or 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 — and choose under «Mode» whether to crop to fill or fit the whole frame with bars. Re-encoding runs in the tab through the browser recorder, so nothing is uploaded, and «Export WebM» hands back the finished file. Recording goes through MediaRecorder, the encoder built into the browser. WebM (VP8/VP9) is the format it can always write; H.264 in MP4 is licensed and missing from many browser builds. TikTok, Reels and Shorts all accept WebM on desktop upload. If your editor or platform demands MP4, remux the file afterwards — the framing is already correct by then.
This version focuses on the picture, and on some browsers the audio track does not make it into the recorded WebM. Play the export straight away to check. If the sound is missing and you need it, drop the original audio back over the exported video in an editor — the visuals are already cropped the way you want.
There is no fixed megabyte cap; the file is read locally and the limit is the tab's memory. A typical laptop handles a few hundred megabytes and clips of two to three minutes. An hour-long lecture recording will almost certainly stall the tab, so cut it into segments first and reframe those.
Crop to fill scales the picture until it reaches every edge of the new frame and discards the overflow — going 16:9 to 9:16 costs roughly a third of the width on each side. Fit with bars keeps the whole frame and pads it. Use the first for vertical feeds, the second when a table, caption or edge-hugging logo must stay visible.
Load the clip, set the format to 9:16 TikTok/Reels/Shorts, set the mode to crop to fill and press Export WebM. You get a full-bleed 9:16 frame with no letterboxing. Run the result through a safe zone check before posting so captions do not end up underneath the app interface.
Yes — the clip is encoded a second time on top of whatever compression it already carried. Fast motion and small text suffer most. Feed it the highest-quality master you have rather than a copy that has been through a messenger, and avoid running the same file through the converter repeatedly.
It opens in mobile browsers, but exporting a long clip on a phone is slow and the tab can be evicted from memory if you switch apps. For anything over a minute a desktop is safer. On mobile, keep the tab in the foreground for the whole recording.
