Instagram shows one cover three different ways: a square in the profile grid, a 4:5 slice in the feed and the full 9:16 frame inside Reels. A headline that sits perfectly in the vertical version gets sliced through the middle in the grid. Load the clip, scrub to the frame you want and flip «Preview crop» between «1:1 profile grid», «4:5 feed» and «9:16 full Reels». The video is read locally in the tab, and «Download PNG checkshot» saves the chosen frame as an image. No — it is a practical crop check, not an app emulator. The 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 ratios are accurate, but Instagram keeps adjusting padding, caption placement and grid tile sizing. A frame that passes with margin to spare will survive those changes; a frame with text hugging the edge is worth redoing.
Grid tiles are square while the clip is a 9:16 vertical, so the square is taken from the centre. On a 1920-pixel-tall frame only about the middle thousand pixels survive vertically, while the full width stays. Anything near the top or bottom edge of your cover simply disappears in the grid.
No. The cover is chosen in the app at publishing time, where there is a frame timeline and an upload option. This tool comes earlier: it tells you which frame is worth using, instead of hunting for it blind on a phone screen. The saved PNG checkshot can be uploaded as a custom cover where the app allows it.
Whatever the browser itself can play: MP4 with H.264, WebM and usually MOV. Files straight off an Android phone or iPhone open fine. Exotic codecs such as ProRes, or HEVC inside a MOV container, often refuse to play in a browser — export a plain MP4 from your editor and load that instead.
Nowhere. The file is read through a local object URL, frames are drawn onto a canvas in your own tab, and the PNG checkshot is saved straight from the browser. No network request carries the clip, so an unreleased ad cut can be checked here without handing it to a third party.
Look for open eyes, no motion blur and a calm background behind any text. Keep the important elements inside roughly the central square of the frame so they survive all three crops. Dark frames vanish in a busy feed — between two similar candidates, take the brighter, higher-contrast one.
